In this special two-part episode of The Freed Black Girl, I take you on a journey into my family’s history. Beginning over 12 years ago I set out to uncover the roots of my maternal lineage. My quest began with my grandmother, Willa Mae—a woman of mystery to me, strength, and love, who passed away before I was born. Although I knew little about her, I soon discovered that she was not only a healer as a nurse but also a medicine and conjure woman with Taino-Jamaican heritage born in Knoxville, Tennessee.
My family also unearthed the story of my great-grandfather, King David Snodgrass in Hollywood, Alabama. In 1939, as part of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writer's Project during the Great Depression, he shared our family’s history with warmth, pride, and vivid imagery; preserving our legacy through the rich tradition of storytelling. These revelations have brought new understanding to my own life, showing me how the past shapes the present. Join me as I explore these profound connections and reflect on the importance of knowing our family stories. #ancestralwisdom #generationalgifts #geneologyresearch #generationalhealing #greatmigration #familystories
